Skin diseases are too common these days, one of the most common of those being Guttate psoriasis. What is Guttate Psoriasis?
Guttate psoriasis is a common type of psoriasis, which occurs in a drop shaped red patches anywhere on the skin. The size of the patches differs a lot. They aren’t necessarily small in size; they can increase up to 10cm in diameter. It is a chronic disorder where the treatment is quite difficult because the formations of lesion are unpredictable.
Guttate psoriasis does not occur in a certain age group, but it can occur in anybody, irrespective of the age. Research shows that people falling in the age group of 16-27 years are most affected. Causes of Guttate Psoriasis
There are many causes of Guttate psoriasis. Mainly, it is caused by streptococcal throat infection. It can usually be inherited, which means it can also be genetic. In case of two identical twins, if one of them suffers from this chronic illness, the other twin is likely to get it as well.
Other causes include the disorders of the nervous and endocrine systems, certain drug reactions and previous infections. Guttate psoriasis does not spread, that means it is not a contagious disease. But it usually occurs due to sore throat or bacterial or viral infections.
What triggers Guttate Psoriasis?
Guttate Psoriasis does not show symptoms; it comes abruptly and there are various things that can trigger it, such as:
- Respiratory infections
- Streptococcal infection
However, it is not mandatory that throat infection causes guttate psoriasis. If you feel you have a flare for strep throat psoriasis, contact your doctor immediately and get medication to control psoriasis.
Guttate Psoriasis Treatment
The cure for guttate psoriasis is a bit of a complex process. As the lesions appear on skin randomly. The treatment of psoriasis is primarily done in four ways:
- External drugs
Phototherapy, also known as light therapy, cures many skin diseases including jaundice. It is done by using fluorescent lights, L.E.D’s, lasers, U.V lights etc.
Plasmapherisis is done in the blood, where several blood cells are returned or exchanged.
Immunomodulation is the process of changing or improving the immune system. Although local medicines that containing vitamin D help, they aren’t sufficient in serious cases.
Guttate Psoriasis Treatment
Sunlight and ultraviolet rays also help fighting the skin disease. Along with the medications come the side effects like itching. Dermatologists across the world have even prescribed a specific diet plan for psoriasis patients.
In mild cases, one can cure the lesions sitting at home. Sitting in the sun for minimum an hour can help decrease the disease. In winters and autumns special care of the skin should be taken to prevent drying of skin.
Sometimes applying moisturisers after washing yourself might act as a boon, as moisturizers lock the moisture present in your skin. And so! Topical treatments are more advised to treat guttate psoriasis.
Essential oils are considered the best treatment to treat psoriasis. Many people and health experts have vouched for essential oils as their prominent choice in treating guttate psoriasis.
- Sea buckthorn essential oil
Sea buckthorn oil contains omega-3 and omega-6; these fatty acids play an immense role in soothing and controlling inflammation. It also restores immune system. This oil also slows down the aging process and rejuvenates the skin.
Sea buckthorn essential oil is infamously used for treating sun burns, infections, ulcerations and scalds. It has UV blocking agents that make this oil a prominent choice.
- Neem essential Oil
Neem oil is a natural oil that contains more than 140 active agents. It has many beneficial antibacterial and antiseptic properties that can heal lesions. This oil is best when it comes to treat guttate psoriasis.
This miraculous oil can clean up infections, scars, broken skin, dry skin, injury and prevent psoriasis from growing. This oil is also effective against insect bites and works as best insect repellent.
Add equal amount of neem oil, rosemary oil, lavender oil, tea tree oil and six tablespoons of coconut or almond oil. Mix this blend and apply on the areas infected.
- Apple cider vinegar
Apple cider vinegar has alkaline that helps in reducing inflammation. Rinsing the area with water that has a cup of apple cider vinegar added can sooth itching.
While using this treatment, make sure the water is cold and not hot, as hot water can irritate your skin.
- Bath with jojoba oil
Add 40 drops of jojoba oil to 5 litres of water and use it as after bath concoction to rinse your body and hair. This will also nourish your skin and help in reduction of itching.
You can also use Retinoids in a cream form or as an oral treatment. However, essential oils and retinoids are not recommended for pregnant women and nursing women.
Dietary supplements for guttate psoriasis patients
Intake of natural ingredients such as fish oil, garlic, and enzymes can be beneficial in treating guttate psoriasis.
Turmeric – is an ancient method used by Chinese ancestors. It can reduce inflammation and kill the bacteria spreading infections. It is also beneficial in eradicating pain, swelling and inflammation attached with psoriasis.
Green tea – drinking green tea will detox your body henceforth, flushing out all the toxics and bacteria. It has an amazing cleansing power.
Since the reasons behind the occurrence of the illness are not completely clear yet, it is advised to always consult your doctor before applying any of the described treatments. Moreover, one has to keep in mind, that psoriasis makes sink more sensitive to various chemicals, so you have to be really careful and you should always do a patch test before using any kind of remedy.
